Let's have fun together… The festival have arranged for the circumcision feasts of şehzade (sultan's son) (sür-i hitan), engagements and marriages of sultan hanıms (sultan's sisters) (sür-i cihaz), birth of the sultan's child (veladet-i hümayun), victories, capturing fortresses (fetih şadumanlığı), visit of a foreign guest or an ambassador, şehzade's first classes (Bed-i besmele), ascending to the throne of the sultan. And they have been arranged for foreigners and various reasons like religional feasts, departure and arrival of sultan to the old palace, namaz. The only festival for the sultan's son beginning to school has been arranged by II. Mahmut. Regeneration, animation, activation… Ottoman festivals has many functions like economical, political, religional, mental. Saving the society from religional, social taboos and pressure, the festivals formed an independent area, conduce to regeneration, animation of individuals and the society and sometimes it helped them to forget the depression casued by the defeats and disasters. These festivals also refreshed the national economy, there had been vastly expenses and the prodigality sensed by every social classes. Like today's exposions, artisans and all the producers both advertised themselves and showed the technological innovations by exposing their products. The gifts that were given to sultan by the foreign guests gain value by the innovations they contain and as well as the national economy activated by the gifts of the pashas, best men, the prominent people, trousseau of the bride and gifts that were given by the artisans, it also activated by the gifts and money that were given by sultan to the needy people. People felt happy by the sense of being a member of an association and provided to express their enthusiasm and emotions all together. General ambience of the Ottoman festivals Being together of the Sultan and people in those festivals is the most important speciality of the Ottoman festivals. People were watching the same festival with the Sultan. And it was told that beanfeast arranged for the people and rewarded who showed skills. It was important to enjoyment of the public. Festivals had arranged in larger areas like marketplaces so that the public could watch the entertainments. Motion play artist's mission was to entertain people and it relied on the skill of the player. The entertainments in the motions plays mostly contain the plays that rely on the surprising tricks and the skills of the circus, in those shows the purpose is not to explain something to the audience, but is to show them a situation. The artisan corporations, entertain people by shouldering their product as they exhibit them on the cars. If there were two cars, one was exhibited for the sultan and the other was for the public. On the circumcision feast of Şehzade Mehmet, there were more than two hundreds of artisan corporations, wheeled shops, counters, bakeries, boats, huge models of mosque and hamams which were carried by fifty person, countless players, musicians, jugglers and acrobats who came from all around the world. All the rulers and ambassadors from west to east invited to this feast that took fifty two days. This festival took place in At Meydanı, nowadays called Sultanahmet. A foreign witness told us that the first day of the education of II. Mahmut's son the bosphorus filled with thousands of boats from İstanbul to Kadıköy and he told that the sultan and his son boarded on beatifully and brilliantly embossed two boats. People who were on the festival area were more than one hundred and fifty thousand and the soldiers who were charged to order the area were twenty four thousands. On the right of sultan were the şeyhülislam, hocas of the palace and on the left officer of status and in front of the throne there were the commandants and the kaptan-ı derya.
